The proposed project will conserve globally significant biodiversity through the creation of a system of protected areas encompassing a representative sample of six critical ecosystems that are unique to Cape Verde. The project will also halt and reverse existing degradation of land and water resources within the protected areas and adjacent landscapes. Full participation will be guaranteed for local communities, NGO’s, and other stakeholders in the design and implementation of conservation plans, resource management activities, and the creation of income-generating alternative livelihood options.
The project is explicitly designed to undertake significant capacity building strategies to empower public and private institutions in Cape Verde in their efforts to conserve island ecosystems and undertake long-term adaptive management against potential future degradation of Cape Verde’s environment. Implementation of the project will play a crucial role in achieving sustainable development and poverty alleviation. Strategic measures of the project will include: - a strengthened policy and legal framework for conservation of biodiversity and integrated and participatory management of protected areas;
- an institutional framework created and operational for the participatory management of protected areas;
- creation of six natural parks with significant community participation;
- improved capacity of local stakeholders and state agencies in sustainable resources management;
- creation and strengthening of income generating activities for local communities; and
- awareness building and education on environmental conservation at the local and national level.
